About the Artwork

Between Freedom and Captivity is a contemporary figurative acrylic painting by Tariq Gill, a Contemporary Pakistani Artist, exploring the tension between liberty and restraint. At the centre of the composition, a symbolic figure holds one bird while another remains free nearby, creating a quiet visual dialogue between two contrasting states of existence. The single leaf introduces a subtle connection to the natural world, while the open beak and extended tongue of the free bird add an expressive element that may suggest curiosity, uncertainty, or an attempt at communication. Rather than depicting a dramatic act of confinement, Gill focuses on the psychological space separating the two birds, allowing the contrast to evoke questions of choice, empathy, longing, and responsibility. Through expressive figuration, restrained symbolism, and his distinctive visual language, Gill invites viewers to contemplate how freedom can be experienced, perceived, or denied, and how closely liberation and captivity may exist beside one another.

Curatorial Interpretation

In Between Freedom and Captivity, Tariq Gill examines freedom as both a physical condition and a psychological experience. The two birds become contrasting symbolic presences: one held within the figure’s grasp and the other remaining at liberty. Their proximity suggests that captivity and freedom are not always distant states; they can exist simultaneously within the same emotional and social space. The human figure positioned between them introduces questions of agency, responsibility, and the power one individual may hold over another living being.

The free bird’s open beak and extended tongue complicate the apparent simplicity of the scene, introducing the possibility of communication, curiosity, or an unspoken response to the confined bird. The solitary leaf quietly reinforces the work’s connection to nature while adding to its restrained visual vocabulary. By avoiding an overt narrative, Gill leaves the emotional relationship between the figures open to interpretation. Through expressive figuration, symbolic imagery, and his distinctive acrylic practice, the artist creates a contemplative meditation on choice, empathy, longing, and the delicate boundary between the desire for freedom and the experience of captivity.
