About the Artwork
Venomous Betrayer is a contemporary figurative mixed media painting by Tariq Gill, a Contemporary Pakistani Artist, exploring the destructive effects of betrayal, greed, and emotional isolation. At the centre of the composition, a symbolic figure confronts the viewer with intense, watchful eyes and a protruding tongue, conveying inner conflict, restless desire, and the psychological burden of fractured trust. Surrounding symbolic elements—including a small metamorphic figure drifting away, a suspended abstract form, and the silent presence of the moon—create a contemplative narrative of separation, transformation, and the passage of time. Rather than illustrating a literal story, Gill employs symbolic imagery to examine how selfish ambition and betrayal gradually erode compassion, relationships, and one’s sense of inner peace. Through expressive figuration, layered symbolism, and his distinctive visual language, the painting invites viewers to reflect on the emotional consequences of choices driven by greed and resentment.
Curatorial Interpretation
In Venomous Betrayer, Tariq Gill investigates betrayal as an internal psychological condition rather than a singular act. The symbolic central figure embodies the corrosive effects of unchecked desire and emotional unrest, suggesting that betrayal ultimately wounds both the betrayed and the betrayer. The figure’s penetrating gaze and protruding tongue become expressive metaphors for impulses that are difficult to restrain, revealing the tension between outward appearance and inner conflict.
The surrounding symbolic forms deepen the painting’s contemplative character. The drifting metamorphic figure suggests relationships or aspects of the self that have been irreversibly altered or lost, while the suspended form introduces ambiguity, inviting viewers to consider the uncertain consequences of human actions. Above them, the moon serves as a quiet witness to the unfolding emotional landscape, reinforcing themes of reflection, solitude, and the passage of time. Through expressive figuration, surreal symbolism, and his distinctive mixed media practice, Gill presents a meditation on the fragility of trust and the enduring impact of betrayal, reminding viewers that compassion and integrity remain essential to meaningful human connection.
